Symbolic Wedding Ceremonies in Sicily: Everything You Need to Know

26 October 2026·7 min read

Sicily has everything for a dream destination wedding: sea views, baroque towns, vineyards on the slopes of Etna and food your guests will talk about for years. But when it comes to the ceremony itself, many couples aren't sure where to start. Church? Town hall? Or something more personal?

For more and more of the couples we plan with, the answer is a symbolic ceremony. Here's everything you need to know.

What exactly is a symbolic ceremony?

A symbolic ceremony is a wedding ceremony led by a celebrant rather than a priest or registrar. It has no legal weight on its own, but it has all the emotion of a traditional wedding – and none of the restrictions. You decide on the words, the readings, the music, the rituals and the setting.

Think of it as your wedding ceremony, designed around you.

Symbolic, civil or religious – what's the difference?

  • Civil ceremony: legally binding, led by the local mayor or a delegate, and held in an approved venue or town hall. There is paperwork to complete before you travel, and we're happy to talk you through it.
  • Catholic ceremony: legally binding when performed in a church with the right documents, but with set readings, timings and preparation requirements.
  • Symbolic ceremony: not legally binding, but completely flexible in content, timing and location.

Many couples combine them: a quick, simple legal ceremony at home, followed by their symbolic wedding in Sicily with everyone they love.

Why couples love symbolic ceremonies in Sicily

Freedom of location. You're not limited to approved rooms. Say "I do" on a cliff edge above the Mediterranean, beneath lemon trees, in a vineyard or by a private pool. Have a look at our Sicilian wedding venues to see some of our favourites.

Freedom of timing. Want your ceremony at sunset for that golden Sicilian light? With a celebrant you can.

A ceremony that's really about you. Your celebrant tells your story, so guests laugh, cry and feel they truly know you both by the end.

Inclusive for everyone. Mixed-faith couples, non-religious couples, second marriages and couples with families in different countries all find symbolic ceremonies a natural fit.

Rituals to make it yours

One of the joys of a symbolic ceremony is adding a ritual. Popular ones include:

  • Handfasting – your hands are bound with ribbons or cords, often chosen by family.
  • Wine ceremony – blending two Sicilian wines into one glass. Nero d'Avola, anyone?
  • Sand or salt ceremony – sand from a Sicilian beach, or sea salt from the Trapani salt pans.
  • Ring warming – your rings are passed around your guests to receive their wishes.
  • Letters or a time capsule – sealed letters to open on your first anniversary.

Choosing your celebrant

Your celebrant shapes the whole mood of your ceremony, so choose someone you feel comfortable with. Look for someone who:

  • writes every ceremony from scratch,
  • speaks your guests' languages (an English-speaking celebrant who's also fluent in Italian is ideal for mixed families),
  • knows Sicilian venues and can work with your planner, photographer and musicians.

At Marry Me in Sicily, our celebrant Sabina does all of this, and she works alongside your planner from your first call to your final bow. Find out more about our Celebrant Service.

How a symbolic ceremony is planned

  1. 1.Book your celebrant once you have your date and venue.
  2. 2.Have a get-to-know-you call and complete a short questionnaire.
  3. 3.Choose readings, music and any rituals.
  4. 4.Review and approve your ceremony script.
  5. 5.Agree the running order with your planner and venue.
  6. 6.Relax and enjoy it on the day.

Practical tips for your Sicily ceremony

  • Mind the sun. Midday in July and August is hot. Late afternoon or sunset ceremonies are far more comfortable, and the light is beautiful.
  • Have a plan B. Sicily is sunny, but a covered terrace or indoor space is always wise.
  • Think about sound. Outdoor spaces can swallow voices, so a small PA system helps guests hear every word.
  • Keep it to 20–40 minutes. Long enough to feel meaningful, short enough to keep everyone comfortable.
  • Give guests a little guide. A printed order of service in English and Italian helps everyone follow along.

Frequently asked questions

Is a symbolic ceremony legal in Italy?

No, it isn't legally binding on its own. Most couples complete the legal part in their home country.

Can we still have a priest or religious elements?

You can include a blessing, prayer or religious reading within a symbolic ceremony if you'd like.

How long does a symbolic ceremony last?

Usually 20 to 40 minutes, depending on readings and rituals.

Can we write our own vows?

Yes, and we'd encourage it. Your celebrant can help if you're stuck for words.

Do guests know it isn't the legal ceremony?

Only if you tell them! For your guests, this is your wedding.

When should we book a celebrant?

For May–October dates, 12–18 months ahead is ideal.
